When remaking the Godzilla (2014) trailer there were many similarities and differences we noticed when comparing the two!

SIMILARITIES:
  • The cinematography and shots with people were easy to recreate as they were realistic to film.
  • We were able to easily convert the score to our trailer and record the dialogue. However some of the script had to be cut to fit the time scale of the rest of the trailer, as we didn't have as many shots as the original.
  • We were able to use the production company credits and titles using Adobe Photoshop.
  • We were able to easily apply cinematic effects such as the brightness and contrast to our trailer.
  • The editing transitions such as the fades were easy to recreate.
  • We used Adobe creative suite to edit this trailer.

DIFFERENCES:
  • We were unable to recreate some of the shot types due to the high quality special effects used for this high concept film/trailer. This lead to improvisation and not necessarily the same cinematography.
  • Both the location and set such as the ocean scene were difficult to recreate.
  • Since we were in college and a short time limit, we had little time or money to spend on props and costumes.
  • Godzilla is a high concept film made by the conglomerate company Warner Brothers. This meant that they could afford SFX on a great scale, as well as hiring Gareth Edwards, best known for his independent film Monsters which was made entirely in his room, as the director. We were unable to recreate any of these special effects, which lead to improvisation.

Overall, after completing this task I have learnt that many shots consist within a trailer. As well as thought out cinematography, trailers also need well edited footage, titles and sound in which we will have to make from scratch. Because of this, high concept films such as Godzilla (action/science fiction films) that involve special effects will be very complicated and time consuming to create. Therefore, when it comes to making my trailer, I will pick a more realistic genre such as a thriller, horror, or social realist.
